How to fix GPS problems on your iPhone

Lost in the city because the iPhone GPS does not guide you well, it stays “searching…” or it pins the blue dot far from where you are? At iRepairs we have prepared a clear and up-to-date plan (iOS 17–18) to recover precise location without driving yourself crazy.

1) Enable and properly adjust Location

GPS depends on permissions and fine-grained options. Check:

  • Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services → turn on the switch.
  • Go into each maps or delivery app (Maps, Google Maps, Uber, Komoot…) and choose “While Using the App” or “Always”.
  • Enable Precise Location so that the blue dot is not hundreds of meters off.
  • In System Services, enable: Compass Calibration, Routing & Traffic, Networking & Wireless, Setting Time Zone. If you navigate on foot, also enable Motion Calibration & Distance.

2) Fix date, time and time zone

A misadjusted time can break the position calculation (it affects A-GPS): Settings > General > Date & Time > Set Automatically. If you travel, force the correct time zone and restart.

3) Active connection: data, Wi-Fi and airplane mode

The iPhone combines GPS with data/Wi-Fi to speed up positioning:

  • Check Cellular data (4G/5G) or a stable Wi-Fi network.
  • Toggle Airplane mode for 10–15 seconds and turn it off: it resets the radios.
  • If you use a VPN, disable it to test. Some VPNs degrade geolocation due to latency.
  • On 5G, try fixing 4G/LTE temporarily if you notice network instability.

4) Close and restart the app (and the iPhone)

Temporary failures are common after hours of use:

  1. Force quit the maps app (multitasking gesture) and reopen it.
  2. Restart the iPhone. If it is still wrong, turn it off for 30 seconds and turn it on.

5) Calibrate the compass and improve the arrow direction

If the dot places you correctly but the arrow points the wrong way:

  • Open Compass, move the iPhone in a figure “8” to recalibrate.
  • Settings > Compass > enable Use True North.
  • Avoid metal cases and mount magnets: they introduce interference.

6) Optimize battery saving and accuracy

With Low Power Mode or Battery protection, some apps reduce the location frequency:

  • Disable Low Power Mode while navigating.
  • In Battery Health, disable temporary limits if they affect performance.

7) Safe resets: location, network and settings

If nothing changes, apply resets that do not erase your data:

  • Reset Location & Privacy: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Reset > Reset Location & Privacy. When you open the apps they will ask for permission again.
  • Reset Network Settings: same path > Reset Network Settings (it forgets saved Wi-Fi; have the passwords handy).
  • Check for a Carrier update: Settings > General > About (if there is a notice, update).

8) Update iOS and the maps app

Many GPS problems are fixed with patches:

  • Settings > General > Software Update → install the latest version available.
  • Open the App Store and update third-party Maps (Google Maps, Waze, Strava…).

9) Best practices for a reliable location

  • Test in the open air (without roofs, tunnels or very enclosed courtyards).
  • Temporarily remove the metal or magnetic case.
  • Avoid carrying the iPhone at the bottom of the backpack under metal objects.
  • If you use an Apple Watch with a route, keep the iPhone nearby for stable shared data.

Troubleshooting voice directions problems

  • Settings > Maps > Voice directions → raise the volume and enable Speak over CarPlay.
  • Settings > Sounds & Haptics → check the general volume and that it is not on silent.
  • In CarPlay, check the Audio source and Mute directions.

When the problem is hardware

If the blue dot jumps even in the open air or takes more than 1–2 minutes to fix the position, there could be a failure in the antenna, RF module or damage from drops/moisture. At iRepairs we diagnose the hardware and calibrate after the repair to recover stable accuracy.

For Mac users

If Maps on macOS does not locate you:

  • macOS: System Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services → enable Maps and System Services > Routing & Traffic.
  • Active Internet connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet) and Date & Time on automatic.
