12 solutions for when your Mac keyboard does not respond
1. Clean the keyboard
If some keys do not work or feel stiff, it may be due to the buildup of dust or dirt residue, especially if you use the Mac while eating. A basic cleaning can restore the normal response to the keyboard:
- Place the keyboard in a vertical position, tilted about 75º so that the dirt can come out easily.
- Use compressed air and spray on the affected areas, moving from left to right.
- Turn the MacBook or external keyboard to the sides and repeat the process to make sure you clean all the areas.
2. Update macOS
The operating system updates usually include hardware and software bug fixes, including the keyboard. To check whether updates are available:
- Open System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Download and install the available updates.
- Restart the computer once the installation is complete.
3. Delete the keyboard preferences
macOS saves keyboard configurations in .plist files. If any is damaged, it can cause response errors. Before modifying them, make a backup with Time Machine. Then follow these steps:
- Open Finder and press Cmd + Shift + G.
- Type ~/Library/Preferences/ and click “Go”.
- Find and delete the file com.apple.keyboardtype.plist.
- Restart the Mac.
4. Restart your Mac
A restart may seem like a basic solution, but many times it is enough. Close all the open apps, save your files and restart the computer. This process resets the input drivers and can solve temporary keyboard freezes.
5. Uninstall the recently installed applications
Some applications can interfere with the keyboard drivers. If the problem appeared after installing a new software, try removing it:
- Open Finder and go into the Applications folder.
- Click “Sort by > Date Added”.
- Uninstall the recent apps and restart the Mac.
6. Check the USB ports
If you use a USB keyboard, disconnect it and reconnect it. Then test another device (such as a mouse) in the same port. If it works correctly, the problem is not in the port, but in the keyboard or the cable.
7. Check the keyboard batteries or charge
If you use a wireless keyboard, make sure the batteries are not depleted or that the battery is charged. In the case of the Magic Keyboard, try another Lightning cable and another USB port on the Mac.
8. Check Bluetooth
On Bluetooth keyboards, connection failures are frequent. Try removing the paired keyboard and reconnecting it:
- Open System Settings > Bluetooth.
- Make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
- Select the keyboard and click the X to remove it.
- Pair the device again.
9. Check the wireless dongle
If you use a keyboard with a USB receiver (dongle), connect it to another port or even to another computer. If it works correctly there, the keyboard and the dongle are fine; the problem could be in the Mac's system.
10. Reset the keyboard driver
macOS allows you to reset the keyboard settings easily. Go to System Settings > Keyboard and select Reset keyboard settings. This returns all the configurations to their original state.
11. Start in safe mode
Safe mode disables third-party extensions and helps detect software conflicts. To access it:
- Turn off the Mac and hold down the Shift key when turning it on.
- Log in and test whether the keyboard responds.
- Restart normally to exit safe mode.
12. Run a hardware test
If none of the above works, there may be a physical problem in the keyboard or the board. Run the Apple diagnostic:
- Turn off the Mac.
- Turn it on while holding down the D key.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to run the Apple Hardware Test.
