12 solutions to fix the sound on your iPhone

1. Restart the iPhone correctly

A restart clears stuck processes. On models without a home button, press and hold the side button + volume up/down and swipe to turn off; wait 15 s and turn it on again. On models with a home button, hold power + home until you see the logo.

2. Check silent mode, modes and the Action button

On an iPhone with a ring/silent switch, move it towards the screen to turn on the sound. On models with an Action Button, make sure it is not set to mute. Open the Control Center and confirm that Silent mode and Focus modes are turned off.

3. Raise the volume in the right place

Some controls are contextual. Raise the volume while playing a song or video. In Settings > Sounds and Haptics, adjust Ringtone and Alerts and, if you prefer, turn on Change with Buttons so that the buttons affect the ringer.

4. Check the audio output (Bluetooth, AirPlay, CarPlay)

It is common for the iPhone to “send” the sound to nearby headphones or a speaker. Open the Control Center, tap the AirPlay icon on the player and select “iPhone”. In Settings > Bluetooth disconnect temporary accessories and try again.

5. Turn off “Do Not Disturb” and check Focus

In Settings > Focus modes, turn off Do Not Disturb, Work or Sleep if they are active. Check that Allow Notifications includes important calls and apps.

6. Clean the speaker and receiver carefully

Dust and lint greatly reduce the volume. Use a soft, dry and clean bristle brush to remove dirt from the grilles (bottom) and the receiver (top, next to the camera). Avoid liquids and compressed air. If your iPhone showed a liquid detection warning, let it dry before charging or using the port.

7. Remove cases or protectors that cover the audio

Some thick or poorly aligned cases strangle the speaker. Remove the case and protector; test a song and a call on speaker to compare.

8. Test with headphones (and the “stuck in headphones” mode)

Plug in and unplug headphones a couple of times. If you hear sound when plugged in and not when unplugged, it could be “stuck” in headphone output or there could be dirt in the port. Repeat the cleaning and restart.

9. Hardware test with system apps

Record 10 s in Voice Memos and play it back. Then make a call on speaker. If the clip sounds fine but the call does not, the problem may be in the receiver. If nothing sounds, suspect the main speaker.

10. Check Accessibility options that affect audio

  • Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual: adjust the Left/Right Balance and turn off Mono if you do not need it.
  • Headphone Safety: turn off Reduce Loud Sounds temporarily to test.
  • Sound Recognition: turn it off if it interferes with sound notifications.

11. Update iOS and reset settings (without erasing data)

In Settings > General > Software Update install the latest available version. If it persists, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset > Reset > Reset Settings. This does not erase your photos or apps, but it does erase preferences (network, keyboard, etc.).

12. (Only if nothing works) backup and restore

Make a backup in iCloud or with a computer and perform a clean restore. Set it up as a new iPhone and test the audio before loading your backup. If the “clean” iPhone still fails, it is very likely to be hardware.

Signs of a hardware fault

  • Distortion even at low volume or “crackling” when playing.
  • Very low volume despite cleaning and adjustments.
  • Intermittent failure after a knock or contact with water.
  • The microphone sounds distant in voice memos and calls.

In these cases, the right thing is a technical inspection of the speaker, receiver, microphones and, if applicable, of the connector/port (dirt, corrosion) or the acoustic mesh.

Extra tips for more reliable sound

  • Keep the speaker grilles and the port clear.
  • Avoid direct compressed air; it can damage internal components.
  • Use cases with precise cutouts and certified accessories.
  • Turn on Keyboard Sounds and Lock Sound if you want to confirm that the ringer works.
