How to restore your iPad to factory settings

Learn how to restore your iPad to factory settings with iRepairs: a complete guide to safely erase data and improve performance.

How to restore your iPad to factory settings

Restoring your iPad to its factory state is a useful action when the device starts to run slower, you are going to sell it or you simply want to start from scratch without accumulated files or settings. The process is safe and quick as long as you prepare the device correctly.

At iRepairs we have prepared an updated guide so that you can restore your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch safely, protecting your personal data and leaving your device as if it had just come out of the box.

1. Make a complete backup

Before erasing your iPad it is essential to make sure that your photos, files, notes and settings are protected. To do this you must create a backup with iCloud or with a computer. With recent versions of iOS and iPadOS, the process is faster and allows you to include app settings, passkeys and sensitive data.

  • Open Settings > your name > iCloud > iCloud Backup and turn on “iCloud Backup”.
  • If you prefer to do it with a computer, connect your iPad and select Back Up Now from Finder (macOS) or iTunes (Windows).

2. How to erase content and settings from the iPad

Once you have a recent backup, you can now restore the device. With iPadOS 17 and 18 the menu has changed slightly, but the process is still intuitive.

  • Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad.
  • Tap Erase All Content and Settings.

The system will show a summary of the data that will be deleted and of the services that will be deactivated (such as Find My iPad). Then:

  1. Tap Erase again to confirm.
  2. Enter your device passcode and, if requested, the password of your Apple ID.
  3. If you use an eSIM, the system will ask you if you want to keep it or remove it. If you opt to erase it, afterwards you will have to contact your carrier to activate the plan again.
  4. Wait for the process to finish. It can take between 3 and 10 minutes, depending on the model and capacity.

3. If you can't erase the iPad content

In 2024 and 2025 Apple has reinforced the security options, so you may not be able to access the menu if the iPad is locked or disabled. In those cases you have alternatives:

  1. If you forgot the Screen Time passcode, you can reset it with your Apple ID from the device itself or from a computer.
  2. If you restore the iPad from a backup, remember that the Screen Time passcode is not deleted.
  3. If the device is disabled, you will have to use recovery mode connected to a computer.
  4. If you cannot complete the process, contact iRepairs Apple Technical Support.

4. Unpair your Apple Watch if you have it linked

If you use an Apple Watch with your iPad or iPhone, it is advisable to unpair it before restoring. When you do, the system automatically creates a backup of the watch and erases your data from the device, leaving it ready to set up again or assign to another person.

Restoring your iPad in 2025: a useful and safe practice

Restoring your iPad not only helps to protect your privacy, it can also solve performance problems, app failures or errors after updates. With a recent backup and this guide, the process is simple and allows you to leave the device completely clean for a new use.

If at any time you encounter freezes, forgotten codes or errors during the restoration, the iRepairs team can help you recover the device without losing security or important data.
