My Mac doesn't recognize the USB – Solutions

If when connecting a USB device to your Mac it does not appear either on the desktop or in the Finder, you are not alone. It's a more common failure than it seems, especially after a macOS update or when using adapters with USB-C ports. From iRepairs we explain the most frequent causes and effective solutions if your Mac doesn't recognize the USB, both for storage drives and peripherals.

Why doesn't your Mac recognize the USB?

The problem can have multiple origins, from a damaged cable to a system failure. Here are the most common ones:

  • Defective or dirty USB port: dirt, wear or lack of physical contact can prevent the connection.
  • Damaged or incompatible USB cable: some cables only allow charging and not data transfer, or are not compatible with recent versions of macOS.
  • Compatibility problems: certain old devices or those formatted in systems not recognized by macOS (such as NTFS) may not appear.
  • Lack of power: external disks that do not have their own power source may need more power than the USB port offers.
  • Outdated drivers or software: after a major macOS update, some drivers stop working correctly.
  • The USB device is damaged: if the USB also fails on other devices, the problem is with the device.
  • Finder configuration: if you have unchecked the option to show external disks on the desktop, it may seem that the Mac doesn't detect the USB even if it does.

Knowing the cause is key to applying the correct solution. Below, we show you the steps we recommend following in order.

8 solutions for when your Mac doesn't detect the USB

Try these actions, from the simplest to the most advanced, until your Mac recognizes the device:

  1. Check the USB ports: clean with compressed air and try connecting the device to another port or through a different adapter. On MacBooks with USB-C ports, some cheap hubs or cables can cause intermittent errors.
  2. Try another cable: use a good quality cable and, if possible, certified for data transfer. Some “charging” cables are not suitable for reading information.
  3. Restart the Mac: a full restart can solve temporary conflicts with the USB system.
  4. Check the USB device on another computer: if another computer doesn't recognize it either, the problem is with the USB and not your Mac.
  5. Update macOS: go to System Settings > General > Software Update and check if there is a new version. Apple usually corrects recognition errors in each update.
  6. Use Disk Utility: open the application from Applications > Utilities and check whether the device appears in the sidebar. If it is grayed out, select it and click Mount. You can also use “First Aid” to repair the volume.
  7. Reset the USB controller (SMC and NVRAM): on Macs with Intel chip, shut down the device and hold down the Shift + Control + Option + Power keys for 10 seconds to reset the SMC. On Apple Silicon, just fully shut down the Mac for 30 seconds before turning it on again. This resolves many port detection failures.
  8. Go to an authorized technical service: if after trying all of the above the USB still doesn't work, it could be a failure of the logic board or the internal controller. In that case, bring it to our technical service in Barcelona for a professional review.

Additional tips to prevent future USB failures

  • Avoid disconnecting devices without ejecting them first.
  • Use powered hubs if you connect external hard drives or multiple peripherals.
  • Format USB drives in exFAT to ensure compatibility between macOS and Windows.
  • Keep your system and firmware always updated.

In most cases, USB recognition problems in macOS are due to small connection or software errors, easy to solve with the system's own tools. If, despite everything, the port still doesn't work, a professional diagnosis can prevent further damage or data loss.
