My Mac turns on, but there's no image – What to do?
Dark screen on your Mac? Find out why your Mac turns on but there's no image and bring your screen back to life
You sit in front of your Mac, press the power button and… the screen stays completely black. The startup sound is there, you even hear the fan or the disk click, but you see nothing. This is a more common problem than it seems, especially in devices that are several years old or after a macOS update. Don't panic: there are solutions.
At iRepairs Barcelona we have prepared a step-by-step guide updated for 2025 that will help you identify whether the failure is software, configuration or hardware related. Follow the recommendations in order until you find the real cause.
1. Check the basic connections
Before thinking about a serious failure, make sure everything is properly connected. Image problems can be due to loose cables or damaged connectors. Check the following:
- Power cable: confirm that it is properly connected both to your Mac and to a working power outlet.
- Video cable: check that the HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C or Thunderbolt cable is correctly inserted at both ends, especially if you use an external monitor.
- On desktop devices like the iMac or Mac mini, verify that the cable between CPU and monitor is firm.
- Once everything is checked, restart the device and observe whether the screen shows any sign of life.
2. Reset the PRAM or NVRAM
The PRAM or NVRAM stores essential configuration data, such as screen resolution or startup disk selection. When these parameters become corrupted, they can cause your Mac to turn on but not show an image.
- Shut down your Mac completely.
- Turn it on and hold down the Command + Option + P + R keys before the Apple logo appears.
- Wait until the device restarts and you hear the startup sound a second time.
- Release the keys and let it start up normally.
This process resets screen and startup settings, so it usually solves visual errors after system updates.
3. Reset the SMC (System Management Controller)
The SMC controls hardware functions such as power, battery, fan or backlight. If your Mac turns on but the screen does not respond, it may be a failure in this controller. To reset it:
- Shut down your Mac.
- Connect it to power.
- Press Shift + Control + Option + power button at the same time for a few seconds.
- Release the keys and wait a few moments before turning it on.
If you notice that the charger light briefly changes color, the SMC reset has been completed correctly.
4. Check the brightness or backlight
It seems simple, but sometimes the brightness is so low that the screen appears off. Try the following:
- Press F2 to increase the brightness.
- If you have an external keyboard, make sure the brightness keys work correctly.
- On MacBooks with Apple M1 or M2 chip, hold a flashlight near the screen: if you see a faint reflection of the desktop, the problem is the backlight and will require technical review.
5. Start the Mac in safe mode
Safe mode allows you to start the system with only the essential components, which helps rule out errors caused by third-party extensions or drivers.
- Shut down the Mac.
- Turn it on and hold down the Shift key until you see the Apple logo.
- When it starts up, check whether there is now an image on screen.
If the screen displays correctly in safe mode, it is likely that a software or driver is interfering. In that case, remove recently installed applications or extensions and restart normally.
6. None of this works?
If your Mac continues to turn on without showing an image after following these steps, it may be a failure in the graphics board, the screen or the internal display connection. In these cases a technical diagnosis is essential.
