Is your iPad freezing? Here are our solutions

Has your iPad frozen or stopped responding to touch? Don't worry, you are not alone. This problem is quite common and can be due to software faults, overheating or memory saturation. At iRepairs Barcelona we explain how to revive your device step by step without losing your data.

Whether you use your iPad to work, study or enjoy your free time, these tips will help you get back to normal in minutes. Below, discover why this fault occurs and how to solve it according to your model and iPadOS version (including iPadOS 18).

Why does my iPad freeze?

Freezes or frozen screens are usually due to a combination of factors:

  • Software errors or incomplete updates that cause system freezes.
  • Applications that consume too much memory or run in the background abnormally.
  • Lack of storage space, especially if the iPad has less than 10% free.
  • Low battery or overheating after prolonged use or exposure to the sun.

What to do if your iPad is frozen?

  1. Charge your iPad
An iPad with a very low battery (less than 10%) may appear frozen. Connect it to the original charger and leave it plugged in for at least 45-60 minutes. If after that time it shows the Apple logo, the problem was a power one.
  2. Close the apps and restart the iPad
Too many open applications can saturate the memory. Close them all and restart the device.
With Home button: hold down the top button until “Slide to power off” appears.
Without Home button: hold down the top button and the volume down button until the slider appears.
  3. Free up storage space
Go to Settings > General > iPad Storage and delete apps, photos or videos you don't use. Always leave at least 10–15% of free space for iPadOS to work correctly.
  4. Force restart the iPad
If the screen is still frozen:
    – On iPads without a Home button: press and quickly release the volume up button, then the volume down button, and hold down the top button until the Apple logo appears.
    – On iPads with a Home button: hold down the Home and top buttons simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.
  5. Reset the settings
If the problem continues, reset all settings without erasing your data: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings.
  6. Use repair software
Tools such as WooTechy iPhixer or Tenorshare ReiBoot can repair iPadOS errors without data loss. They are useful if the iPad doesn't boot or gets stuck on the Apple logo.
  7. Restore the iPad in recovery mode
If none of the above works, connect your iPad to a computer with Finder or iTunes, put it in recovery mode and select “Restore”. Make sure you have a backup in iCloud or local before doing it.
  8. Consult an Apple technical service
If after all these steps your iPad still does not respond, it could be a physical problem with the board or the battery. In that case, visit a certified technical service like iRepairs for a professional diagnosis and safe repair.

Tips to prevent your iPad from freezing

  • Keep iPadOS updated to the latest version.
  • Don't fill the storage to the maximum; always leave a free margin.
  • Avoid installing unverified apps or apps from unknown developers.
  • Close the applications you don't use and restart the device from time to time.
  • Avoid extreme temperatures and use certified chargers.
