How to fix overheating problems on your MacBook
Discover how to effectively solve overheating problems on your MacBook with the expert tips from iRepairs.
Is your MacBook getting hotter than normal? It is one of the most common problems on Apple equipment, especially on models several years old, or on MacBooks with Apple Silicon processors when running very demanding tasks. At iRepairs we show you how to identify the cause and what to do to avoid long-term damage.
Overheating can affect performance, accelerate battery wear and even reduce the useful life of internal components. With these 9 updated solutions for 2025, you will be able to keep your MacBook stable and running like new.
9 effective solutions for MacBook overheating
1. Check the Activity Monitor
The Activity Monitor lets you know which apps are consuming resources excessively. If a process is using too much CPU, the temperature will rise rapidly.
Access it from Finder > Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor. In the CPU tab, sort the processes from highest to lowest usage. Close the apps that consume resources for no reason.
Tip: avoid having too many apps open automatically at login (System Settings > General > Login Items).
2. Reduce browser tabs
Browsers —especially Google Chrome— can consume a large part of the MacBook's memory and CPU. If you use many tabs, the temperature increases.
Close unnecessary tabs and, if you can, use Safari, which on macOS 14/15 is much more energy-efficient.
3. Adjust the graphics settings
MacBook Pros with dual GPU (integrated + dedicated) can activate the more powerful graphics card without you needing it. That generates extra heat.
Enable automatic graphics switching in: System Preferences > Battery. This way the system will choose the most efficient GPU according to the task.
4. Reset the SMC (Intel models only)
On MacBooks with Intel processor, the SMC controls fans, charging, thermal sensors and more. If there is a failure, temperature spikes can appear.
To reset it:
- Turn off the MacBook.
- Press and hold Shift + Option + Control + power button for 10 seconds.
- Release and turn on the equipment.
Note: MacBooks with M1, M2 and M3 chips do not have an SMC, since the system manages it automatically.
5. Keep macOS updated
Updates include performance optimizations, thermal management improvements and patches that prevent anomalous processes.
Check whether you have updates in System Preferences > Software Update. Always install the stable versions.
6. Avoid unofficial chargers
Incompatible or low-quality chargers can cause overheating, battery failures or voltage spikes. This is especially critical on recent models with USB-C fast charging.
Always use chargers certified by Apple or with the USB-C PD standard, recommended for your specific model.
7. Check the status of the fans
If your MacBook has fans (the Air M1/M2 models do not include them), they could be dirty or failing.
To do a quick diagnosis:
- Restart your Mac and press and hold the D key (or Command + D on Apple Silicon).
- Run the Apple diagnostic test.
If an error appears, we recommend going to a specialized technician for cleaning or replacement of the fan.
8. Do not block the air vents
Using the MacBook on blankets, sofas or pillows obstructs ventilation and increases the internal temperature.
Always place it on a hard and flat surface. If you work many hours, consider using a cooling base or a stand that raises the laptop to improve airflow.
9. Remove malicious software and problematic apps
Some poorly optimized apps or malware can consume CPU without you noticing, causing high temperatures.
- Scan your Mac with reliable security software.
- Uninstall apps you do not use.
- Check browser extensions that generate excessive consumption.
Keeping the system clean helps both performance and thermal stability.
Keep your MacBook protected and performing well
With these steps, your MacBook should maintain stable temperatures even on long workdays. If the equipment keeps heating up, there may be accumulated dust, thermal failures or battery problems.
